Mpumi Dhlamini is an award-winning South African multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and music director renowned for his dynamic approach to jazz and cross-genre musical exploration. Born in Zola, Soweto, he established his musical foundation at the Drakensberg Boys' Choir School, followed by instrumental studies at the National School of the Arts. Dhlamini is distinguished by his mastery of over ten instruments, including piano, saxophone, trumpet, and percussion, and is celebrated for blending digital and analog production methods. His career launched with his 2007 debut album, Combined Elements, which earned him nominations for both a South African Music Award (SAMA) and a Metro FM Award. He has since released four studio albums, including Note to Self (2018), Imvuselelo (2022), and Nebula Nomad (2024).
As a highly sought-after collaborator and producer, Dhlamini has worked with prominent artists such as Lira, ProVerb, Zwai Bala, and Jimmy Dludlu, and has produced projects for Brian Temba and Wanda Baloyi, among others. His directorial experience includes serving as the Music Director for Lira's SAMA-winning Celebration DVD. Beyond the recording studio, he is a prolific composer for visual media, scoring TV series like UBettina Wethu and serving as composer and music director on international children's programs such as Sesame Street and Takalani Sesame. In 2015, he established his independent record label, MoBlaq Productions. His contributions to the arts were recognized in 2025 when he received the NACA Award for Outstanding Musician, and in 2024, he was appointed a Roland Ambassador. Dhlamini continues to influence the next generation by leading Jazz Workshops at various institutions.
